Some of us chose an additional name
for Confirmation.
Some cultures have ritual moments
for choosing a name identifying an ideal self
or a characteristic to which a person aspires.
These practices might bring to mind
“the amount of courage it has taken
for friends and family, colleagues and students,
to utter and claim names and identities
that hitherto had perhaps
been whispered in the recesses of hearts.
These names and identities
“are at once chosen and given by the Spirit,
as grace for all of us.”*
Claim who you are before God.
Live up to the name God recognizes.
Reverence the name of another
as “an icon of that person.”**
Amen.
