A little boy carried in the crook
of his father’s arm,
who was approaching the altar
in the Communion line, spontaneously
reached for and grasped the host held high,
faster than his father could register
as the priest awaited the “Amen.”
Did the boy sense
that the God in that Bread
belonged to him?
Many approach the Table knowing
that the arms of the Christ
in whose name we celebrate
are open in inclusive welcome
to little children and countless others?*
Amen.
*Baptismal Rites for Infants in the Eastern Church include Communion and Confirmation.
