Who We Are

Then and Now, But with the Same Mission and Spirit

The Beginnings of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary

Founded in Dommartin-sous-Amance, France in 1854, the sisters first served the poor children of the village by the education of girls. In addition to religious instruction the girls were trained in lace-making which provided some economic independence.

In 1864, Bishop Amadeus Rappe of Cleveland invited the Community to the US to serve French immigrants in his diocese. The entire community of eleven sisters, along with four orphans, emigrated to America leaving behind their homeland, families and their foundress, Mother Madelaine, who had died three months before their voyage.

In the spirit of our founders, we respond to the changing needs of our day through a diversity of ministries. What does not change is our dedication to the Humility of Mary, in whose spirit we pray and work for the transformation of the world through justice and peace.

In this same on-going spirit of awareness of current needs, we now welcome you to this Young Adult website!

The Beginnings of this site

The idea for a young adult website was born in the spring of 2023 during a conversation between Sisters Mary Ann Spangler and Jeanne Thurin and several young adults about better ways of young adult-friendly communication. Texting and a link to a mobile-friendly website seemed like the best options. Further consultation with young adults and our HM Leadership evolved into a Young Adult Tech Committee which provided invaluable suggestions and exactly the right people to create this website! A Legacy Grant from the HM Community provided the monies needed to get the website developed through Voltaic Software and off the ground! Thanks, one and all, for your help, support and suggestions!
